Mae Krell is a 22 year old singer-songwriter hailing from New York, who has just released her new EP 'imposter syndrome'. I caught up with Mae about the EP, favourite memories from recording it, and how she would describe it in one sentence.

Hi Mae, how are you?

Hi! I'm doing great, thanks for having me!

How would you describe your sound to the readers?

I like to call it sad girl indie-folk.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

Taylor Swift, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Phoebe Bridgers!

Your new EP ‘imposter syndrome’ is out now, congratulations! You’ve said this is the “culmination of your artistic and personal development over the past two years”. Could you explain more about this and what the process of creating this EP like for you?

Thank you so much! I'm super super excited about it! I wrote all of the songs in the past year or so, which makes it all pretty fresh, both in my songwriting style and the feelings that it was all written about. Every song on the EP was produced and engineered by Jakob Leventhal, who is absolutely incredible- I've had the time of my life working with him and feel extremely lucky that we crossed paths. Working on this EP was the first time that I felt like my voice was really heard and wanted in the production process, which made it a really liberating experience.

Would you say that the songs we’ve heard so far such as ‘phantom limb’ are an accurate representation of what the overall sound of the EP will be?

Yes! Definitely.

If you only had one sentence to describe the EP, how would you describe it?

Leaving myself behind while falling in love, finding myself while losing a friend, and growing into my own skin; losing your first love, losing a best friend, losing yourself, and then starting to process the ways that you might be able to find you again.

What’s the song you are most excited for people to hear from ‘imposter syndrome’?

The title track, imposter syndrome! I think that it's catchy and (hopefully) relatable!

Do you have a favourite memory from recording this EP?

Whenever Jakob and I would get a bit tired, or I was getting too in my head about everything, we'd go out to the backyard attached to the studio and smoke some cigarettes and talk about music and life and whatever else was on our mind. It was really nice and I look back on it all super fondly.

What’s something you hope listeners will take away from listening to ‘imposter syndrome’?

Everything that you go through, whether super positive or super difficult, has some sort of purpose. It never feels like that at the time, especially with hard things, but our experiences can and will always help other people if we let them. Life sucks sometimes: heartbreak, losing friends, being inside your own head, but it's all worth it, I promise.

What’s next for you?

More music and more shows! Always more music and more shows.

And lastly, what have you been listening to recently? Is there anything you want to recommend to us?

A lot of Jack Kays, Ritt Momney and Mac Miller

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions for us, it’s really appreciated!

Thank you for having me!
