Interview with Harri Larkin
Today saw the release of 'Saving Aimee' the latest single from Harri Larkin. I caught up with Harri from the band to talk about the new song, the inspiration behind the lyrics and what plans they have next. Make sure you go and listen to 'Saving Aimee', linked below and give the band a follow on Instagram as well...
Hi Harri, how are you?
I’m good thanks After Midnight music reviewers! Haha. Lots on at the minute in our camp.
How would you describe your sound to the readers?
We are a fusion of funk, pop, jazz and grunge. I’m a storyteller and my songs really get into the grittiness of what (who’s) bothering me.
Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
For me, the 90s was my favourite time for music . I loved what was going on with grunge /the chili peppers / sublime back then as well as the UK Brit pop scene... but all throughout my teens I was heavily influenced by 70s British punk. Roll all that into a ball and sprinkle on some 2007 Hayley Williams ... that’s me!
Your new song Saving Aimee is out now, can you explain more about the process of making this song? Was it altered at all because of the pandemic?
I actually had this one in the bank for a long time just waiting for the right time to release it into the world ! The pandemic did slow down my release plans for sure though. I have had this collection of songs with me for a number of years. It’s a credit to the songs themselves that they are still so relevant to me as well as others so far down the line.
What was the inspiration for this song lyrically?
This is a very honest and heartfelt song written for one of my mates from my hometown.... it’s so hard to watch someone you care about go through horrible experiences and feel like they are trapped in a bad place. Stuff got really dark for her in our early 20s and I always wanted to be able to help. Aimee saved herself in the end.
This song is your third song this year, will they eventually be a part of a bigger project?
Yes they will! I have been unsure how to navigate this release and kept them under my hat for a while... but I’m proud of them and it’s time! Our album BEACH CITY will be out this summer. 11 tracks of full band, acoustic guitar driven VIBES.
What’s next for you? Do you have any plans for live shows once it’s safe to do so?
Hell yeah we do. We have the go ahead on a few festival slots, fingers crossed they all go ahead.
And lastly, what have you been listening to recently? Is there anything you would recommend for us?
I love Oscar Lang’s EP ‘Antidote To Being Bored’. My favourite is “That wasn’t what I said” it’s the apology song I wish I had written to a few people... following some very bad behavior...
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions, it’s really appreciated.
